American manners? On Christmas Eve I saw that my mother had outdone herself in creating a strange menu. A plate of squid, their backs crisscrossed with knife markings so they resembled bicycle tires. My relatives murmured with pleasure when my mother brought out the whole steamed fish.

Answer:

The answer would be C. A plate of squid, their backs crisscrossed with knife markings so they resembled bicycle tires.

Explanation:

This is the answer because (here are my edge notes) Figurative language is language that is not meant to be taken literally.

A simile is a kind of figurative language. It is a comparison of two different things that uses the words "like" or "as."
