Context clues are a reading tool that consists of looking at the surrounding information of an unknown word in order to infer the meaning of that word. There are mainly five types of context clues: synonym clue, which we can use when a text uses a similar word to the unfamiliar word; antonym or contrast clue: useful to determine the meaning of a word when there is another word with an opposite meaning; explanation clue: when the unknown word is explained or defined; inference clue: which consists of looking to the ideas of a whole paragraph or text to determine the meaning of a word, and lastly, punctuation clue, which consists of looking how texts are punctuated, for example, when a word or phrase is enclosed in dashes, parentheses or brackets, we can infer that it encloses a definition or explanation of a word.
