It may seem surprising that no Confederate sympathizers took action against Van Lew, given her strong and public views on secess

ion and slavery. Surely there were suspicions, especially among her upper-crust neighbors, but the matter never went beyond those suspicions. Historians have suggested that the secessionists were victims of their own cultural bias, believing that no aristocratic person, and certainly not a lady, would ever consider taking part in anything as impolite as spying. A true lady managed her servants, prepared parties and gatherings, and blindly supported her husband. Such attitudes worked in Van Lew's favor, diverting suspicion from her.
—The Dark Game,
Paul Janeczko

Based on your reading beyond this paragraph, what is an overall central idea that the author develops in The Dark Game?
A) Van Lew’s actions of espionage were possible only because she was a woman.
B) Van Lew’s deviant behavior was not the norm for aristocratic people.
C) Van Lew’s heroism lies in that she openly spoke about her views of secession and slavery.
D) Van Lew’s actions revolutionized the expectation and role of women in society.

Read the poem below and choose the mood that best fits it.

Hi, I’m Lena and I will be answering your question to the best of my ability. If you have any further questions after my answer, do not hesitate to ask me! ツ

♡ Let’s look at the main important thing(s) that will lead you in the correct path.

♥ Key words. You should always look for key words in a passage. For example, if you see "bounced with joy" in a passage, it will most likely be happy.

♡ Let's solve the question together.

The house dog lay stretched out on the floor,

Where the shade, afternoons, used to steal;

The busy old wife by the open door,

Was turning the spinning wheel,

And the old brass clock on the mantle tree,

Had plodded along to almost three.

♥ Again, look for key words. We can see stretched and shade. That gives us a clue that it's calm. We can also use POE, meaning process of elimination. At first glance, it may seem sad, but there's nothing to be sad about. There's nothing hopeless or too happy, so it's calm.
