Because of the property of paleomagnetism, iron rich rocks show the location of magnetic poles at the time of their formation.
Paleomagnetism is concerned with the study of materials that have a record of the earth's magnetic field due to the content of magnetizable material within them. As iron is easily magnetized, materials with a high iron content are likely to indicate the nature of the magnetic field of the earth when they are formed.
