Langston Hughes tells us of a young poet he met who did not want to be a "negro poet" but a "white poet." Hughes interpreted this as the poet's rejection of his racial background, and a desire to be more "white." He believes no great poet can be ashamed of being himself. He believed his individualistic desire to "run towards whiteness" would make him incapable of becoming a great poet.
