Explanation:

By the end of this excerpt, there is an explanation as to why Tom does not fear the devil. He has gotten so used to living with a difficult wife that the devil didn't seem to be scary or dangerous to him.

The comparison between the devil and Tom's wife shows how foolish Tom is. No matter how terrible a human being can be, they will never be as cruel as the devil. So, the devil should be feared.
