George Washington recognized the right of the people to form parties, but he didn´t like them. He saw them as organizations of groups looking to have more power than other groups. He also feared that partisan battles could affect governent and public affairs. His appointment of Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson reflects pragmatism and search for balance and compromise; Hamilton belonged to the Federalist Party and Jefferson was a member of the Anti-Federalist Party.
There is now no restriction on the amount of money that organizations or individuals can give to candidates in national elections due to a ruling by "the Supreme Court", although this ruling was highly controversial.
