The Dismal Swamp Canal started being built in 1793 and it was completed by 1805.It was mostly constructed by slaves. The responsibles behind its constructions were The Dismal Swamp Company, the state of North Carolina and Virginia.

Its main use was the carriage of lumber from the Dismal Swamp by the time the canal was completed.

The canal connected the two states mentioned before and established a connection between the Elizabeth and Pasquotank River. Therefore, it connected the Albemarle Sound with the Chesapeake Bay.
