Why was the Ohio river valley a source of conflict between the French native Americans

The French people didn't want the British colony citizens to enter the Ohio river valley so they built forts to intimidate the people and prevent them from moving there. The British on the other hand had instructions from the king to spread to that land and claim it as new territory for the king. As no sides wanted to let go, the war came soon enough.
