It doesn't explain why he is crying, and is the most suspenseful, but one could argue it was C, because they could have going the wrong direction, but B is the most suspenseful due to the crying and emotion in it. In order to intesnify the suspense of the story you can add this sentence, one of your troop members began to cry, in order to intensify the suspense because you don´t know why is the member of the troop crying or feeling that way, to make him cry out of the blue. After this you can stop and do not even explain why is he crying, just leave it like that.
