WW1 saw the innovation of much weaponry over previous wars. The machine gun in particular was an extremely deadly offensive weapon that could kill at a never before seen level because of its rate of fire. Because these new offensive technologies were so deadly, trench warfare was introduced in order to try to protect soilders against them in which, soilders took cover in trenches rather than in stand out in the open as in previous wars.
