The main advantage to controlling this area was control of the Suez Canal.

This was very important because the Allies needed acess to oil from the Middle East. Modern armies had a lot of mechanized equiptment, so oil was important to keep the allied armies going.

In addition, other raw materials from Asia could be accessed via the Suez Canal.

So, the Suez Canal was important to control because it granted access to important resources.
