Answer:

The church taught that the earth was the center of our universe. They thought that the earth was the center because it was God's creation, thus implying that the Church of God was at the center of the whole system. Now when astronomers such as Galileo had made the discovery that the Earth was not in the center of our solar system, instead the sun was, they were seen as a threat by the church for going against their teachings. The church very offended and seen them as a threat because if the earth and the Church of God were not at the center of our known universe, then the church and its position is questioned.

The discoveries of Galileo and other scientists posed a threat to major tenets of the Church´s doctrines and its position. Let´s look at it in this way:  The Church maintained that Earth is the center of our system because it was God´s creation. It is implied that the Church of God is at the center of the whole system.  So, if Earth was not the center of our solar system, as Galileo stated following his findings, if the planet orbits the Sun, then the Church is not at the center of our known universe and its position is questioned.
