Whitman wrote in free verse because he used regular metrical feet. In this line is clear evidence the free verse: <u><em>"I celebrate myself, and sing myself/And what I assume you shall,/ For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you."</em></u> We also see that in these lines are the exact rhyme, the natural speech cadence, and the irregular line length, these are part of the free verse style.
b. When two independent clauses are closely related to each other and are joined by a conjunctive adverb of two syllables or more, place a semicolon before the conjunctive adverb and a comma after it.
