Read the passage and answer the question that follows. from Gulliver's Travels, by Jonathan Swift, "My gentleness and good behav

iour had gained so far on the emperor and his court, and indeed upon the army and people in general, that I began to conceive hopes of getting my liberty in a short time. I took all possible methods to cultivate this favourable disposition. The natives came, by degrees, to be less apprehensive of any danger from me. I would sometimes lie down, and let five or six of them dance on my hand; and at last the boys and girls would venture to come and play at hide-and-seek in my hair. I had now made a good progress in understanding and speaking the language. The emperor had a mind one day to entertain me with several of the country shows, wherein they exceed all nations I have known, both for dexterity and magnificence. I was diverted with none so much as that of the rope-dancers, performed upon a slender white thread, extended about two feet, and twelve inches from the ground. Upon which I shall desire liberty, with the reader's patience, to enlarge a little."
Based on the information in this passage, the story's events will most likely focus on

the characteristics of the society visited by the narrator
the narrator's attempts to forcibly break free from the emperor's control
the narrator's efforts to develop a good relationship with the other characters
the entertainments attended by the narrator over time

the narrator's efforts to develop a good relationship with the other characters

Even though he is tied up and being kept as a prisoner, the narrator still is trying to create a good relationship with the people around him. He could treat them poorly as they began treating him, but he chooses to learn to get to know their society and in turn they start becoming more and more comfortable with him as well. Because he spends so much time detailing his attempts to develop a good relationship, the reader can infer that this is what is most important to him.

One way that the novel differs from earlier literary works is that _____. novelists often leave out many details associated with
Tatiana [17]

The correct answer is “readers are often able to relate better to the characters in novels”.

Indeed, historically, the rise of the novel as a major literary form in the Western World took place during the 18th century due to a series of reasons:

1.- Increase of Literacy in the 18th century: In 1650, 30% of men could read (10% of women). In 1715, 45% of men could read (25% of women). In 1760, 60% of men, could read (40% of women). So in a 100 years the male literacy rate was multiplied by 2 and the female literacy rate was multiplied by 4. At the beginning of the 18th century book sales increased among privileged classes. In the second part of the century book sales increased among the lower classes (middle class).

2.- The appearance of the Middle Class: people working in "the professions" (lawyers, doctors, shopkeepers, & merchants) started making more money. The expansion of the British Empire favored the expansion of the economy.

3.- Technology: the printing press had evolved and was able to print many more books. In 1724 there were 75 printing presses in London. In 1757 there were 180 printing presses in London.

4.- Creation of circulating libraries: private, circulating libraries that functioned on a yearly subscription basis during the 1740s.

5.- Middle class loses interest in Romances. They wanted to read stories about their contemporary era and about characters like them.

Therefore, it is confirmed by the fifth point that middle class readers were only interested in stories which depicted situations and characters that belonged to their social class and trade. Nowadays, with the stratification of society into very numerious and different social groups there are different genres and types of novels for each one of these groups based on age, social class, race, gender, political beliefs, religion, etc.
