The Middle Ages supposed, in a cultural way, especially from the tenth century, a beginning of new artistic and cultural manifestations, animated by the horizon that was opened before the contemporaries.
It was also times of movements of people and ideas, sponsored for the development of commerce, cities and the new emergent class, the bourgeoisie, also universities and pilgrimages.
Literature
From the eleventh century existed the first literary manifestations in romances.
Poetry and narrative began to rapidly increase, especially that anonymous and sung, where the themes of love between a lady and a gentleman, polite love, the adventures of knights in wars.
These compositions were sung by minstrels, poets-singers prepared in special schools, who marched from town to town reciting stories. The favorite theme of the minstrel songs was love, especially that between a gentleman and a lady. Thus, courteous love arises, relationship between a gentleman, and a married lady and, therefore, a relationship more platonic than real, under the danger of performing an unfaithful act and thus violate the rules of the game.
