Before a small piece of an asteroid or a comet enters Earth’s atmosphere, it is called a <u>meteoroid</u>. When it enters Earth’s atmosphere at high speed, it lits up because of the friction caused by particles in the atmosphere and thus it becomes a <u>meteor</u>. When meteor survives and reaches the ground, it becomes a <u>meteorite</u>.

If you look at the night sky and see a falling star, you might be seeing a meteor that burns and never reaches the ground.
