During the Lincoln Reconstruction freedom also meant owning land because the land was the main source of money for people in the Southern States. Because of that, ex-slaves needed their land to cultivate, this pressed the government to settle families on land that were abandoned or that were confiscated from plantation owners, this happened in South Carolina.

Later, when Johnson became president he returned the land to its original owners with the condition that they pledged loyalty to the US and promised to support emancipation, with that, they got all their property restored, except slaves.
