Napoleon Bonaparte assumed the office and the title of Emperor in 2004, formally ending the French Revolution which had started by overthrowing a monarchy. For his coronation, he got pope Pius VII to come to Paris. But he didn´t allow the pointiff to crown him; in a show of power and arrogance, he crowned himself. He then crowned Josephine as Empress. For his formal enthronement, he preferred a very different ceremony from the traditional consecration of French kings in the Reims Cathedral by the archbishop of Reims. Napoleon chose Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
