This was done for several reasons, however, the most primary  reason was the consolidation of power by the monarch concerned. This was because the kings were worried about the perpetuation of power to their offspring after they has passed on.

Germany wanted to preserve the Arian race. This was premised on the fact that the Jews were though to have betrayed the country after the Franco-Prussian war.
