Ooooh I love this ok so Writers, such as William Faulkner, began writing a more specifically Southern form of American Gothic in the 1920s. However, the Southern Gothic genre reached its height in popularity in the 1940s-1960s. Southern Gothic literature was inspired by early Gothic writing, a genre that was popular in 18th century England
Ok, Southern Gothic Lit focuses on grotesque themes, sometimes supernatural elements are involved, but it is mostly a focus on deranged, damaged, delusional character(s). It was inspired from the 18th century Gothic writing style that was popular in England. They were the romantic gothic so like "Dracula" & "Frankenstein". In the 19th century writers like Edgar Allen Poe & Nathaniel Hawthorne began to write. Hawthorne's characters were very flawed. Poe's short stories focus on death and are darkly humored with a desire to expose the characters complexity. Faulkner began to write a more Southern form of Poe & Hawthornes American Gothic in the 1920's. But it bega to become much more popular between 1940-1960's.
