The use of National Security Letters was especially controversial as not only did they not require valid reasons such as probable cause, they also lack any kind of judicial oversight and even force the recipients of such letters to do not disclose that they received these letters. These letter do not need to be approved by a judge and force individuals, private or public institutions to provide all the records of a terrorism suspect to authorities.
