This story is “To Kill a Mockingbird”, written by Harper Lee. The children Jem and Scout Finch live in Maycomb and they witness how their father Atticus Finch defends a black man Tom Robinson. They know he is not guilty, but the jury is prejudiced against black men. In the courtroom, as the jury comes to deliver the verdict, Scout remembers how Atticus told her that a jury never looks at a man they have convicted. Neither of the 12 members of the jury looked at Tom Robinson.

Question: Which of the following best assists readers in inferring that the jury will announce a unanimous guilty verdict?

Answer: 4. Scout’s dreamlike impression that matched what she knew about juries—that they never look at a defendant when they have voted to convict—gave a strong hint about the guilty verdict

A speaker says:
seropon [69]

Answer:

C). I thought it would be fun to wake up early. But when my alarm went off at four o'clock AM, I thought, "Nope, the early bird can just have that worm."

Explanation:

As per the question, the third option exemplifies the most appropriate way to format as per the Basic Style Guide. It does not involve the informal phrases like 'you know, I was like' which signals that it complies with the standard rules(punctuation, grammar, etc.) in order to communicate the intended message clearly and effectively to the specific audience. The other options fail to create that impact. Hence, option C is the correct answer.

How is the simile used to develop Mr. Shiftlet’s Southern gothic character? The image suggests Mr. Shiftlet is likely to die tra
iris [78.8K]

Similes are literary devices that compares words with another directly, a bit different from a metaphor (Metaphors compare things indirectly related).

Mr. Shiftlet’s Southern gothic character

Correct option is B

The simile used to develop Mr. Shiftlet’s Southern gothic character through "The image reinforces the idea that Mrs. Crater and Lucynell are both damaged."

 • The "ugly words" of Mrs. Lucynell was that Shiflet was "a poor disabled friendless drifting man", but she also considers him capable enough to be her daughter's husband.
 • This way of addressing him by the woman who expects him to marry her daughter shows that the world or society he lives in doesn't have much care about others, everyone for themselves.
