The reconstruction era is one that happened after the civil war which was an attempt to get the southern states back into the confederacy together with the newly freed slaves that was up to four million.

The legislatures of the southern state came up with a certain code known as the black codes, which was aimed at controlling the behavior and work of the African Americans and freed slaves.
