The statement that best describes the precedent set by the Supreme Court in New York Times v. United States regarding government censorship was that Government censorship is almost always unconstitutional.

Further Explanations:

New York Times versus United States case number US 713 of 1971 was the case that sets a landmark in American history against censorship. The whole conflict started when Times of New York published its Sunday Edition on 13th June 1971 against a District Court Judge claiming the irreparable injury to the defense importance of the United States. Later the administration produced a restraining order abdicating the New York Times from its further publication. The dispute went to the court and was cited by the Attorney General John N. Mitchell to the Jury as per Section 793 of the Espionage act and grant further publishing of the Pentagon Paper.

The decision of the case granted the “New York Times” to publish its publication that classified the Pentagon Paper without the threat of being censored. The ruling also stated that government censorship is always unconstitutional and always attempted to repress media on many occasions.
