Through these legislations, the central government granted former slaves with the ability to votes, protection from the law, and legal status as citizens.

The reconstruction era ended after Southern Democrats gained power in central government in 1876. They immediately pull out federal troops from the Sothern states who were tasked to make sure the southern government enforced the reconstruction legislations,.

As  a result, the southern governments started to create Racial segregation laws that caused decades of racism and inequality for Black Americans.
