With presentations, you should always have less text on the slides, and instead talk about the points you want to make, rather than having your audience read your slides.

For the text and background correlation, notice how books are usually a sepia-ish color, and the text is black. It's much easier to read dark text on a lighter background. (Unless you're reading at night, but that's a different story)
