In 1980 he was defeated in the election by Ronald Reagan.

Over the next decades, Carter built a successful career as a diplomat, humanitarian and author, and was seeking conflict resolution in countries around the globe.

Jimmy Carter faced a host of economic problems when he became president: stagnating wages, rising unemployment, inflation, and falling industrial productivity.
