Given Information:

Area of rectangle = 16 square feet

Required Information:

Least amount of material = ?

Answer:

x = 4 ft and y = 4 ft

Step-by-step explanation:

We know that a rectangle has area = xy and perimeter = 2x + 2y

We want to use least amount of material to design the sandbox which means we want to minimize the perimeter which can be done by taking the derivative of perimeter and then setting it equal to 0.

So we have

xy = 16

y = 16/x

p = 2x + 2y

put the value of y into the equation of perimeter

p = 2x + 2(16/x)

p = 2x + 32/x

Take derivative with respect to x

d/dt (2x + 32/x)

2 - 32/x²

set the derivative equal to zero to minimize the perimeter

2 - 32/x² = 0

32/x² = 2

x² = 32/2

x² = 16

x = \sqrt{16} = 4 ft

put the value of x into equation xy = 16

(4)y = 16

y = 16/4

y = 4 ft

So the dimensions are x = 4 ft and y = 4 ft in order to use least amount of material.

Verification:

xy = 16

4*4 = 16

16 = 16 (satisfied)

It’s easier if you turn the fractions into decimals and arrange them in order from biggest to smallest. 3/4= 0.75, 5/6= 0.83, 7/9= 0.77, 1/2= 0.5, 2/3= 0.66, 7/12= .583, 15/24= 0.625. Then obviously, you order them from biggest to smallest:
0.83 (5/6), 0.77 (7/9), 0.75 (3/4), 0.66 (2/3), 0.583 (7/12), 0.5 (1/2).

The figure above shows a square inscribed in a rectangle.
Debora [2.8K]

Answer:

31 units ²

Step-by-step explanation:

Area of a rectangle = length × width

Length = 8 units

Width = 5 units

Area of a rectangle = length × width

= 8 units × 5 units

= 40 units ²

Area of of the blue square = length ²

Length = 3 units

Area of of the blue square = length ²

= (3 units) ²

= 9 units ²

Area of the orange colored part of the figure = Area of a rectangle - Area of of the blue square

= 40 units ² - 9 units ²

= 31 units ²

Area of the orange colored part of the figure = 31 units ²

Determine the standard form of the equation of the line that passes through (-5,0) and (0,-9)
bonufazy [111]

Answer:

9x+5y=-45

Step-by-step explanation:

To write the equation of a line we must have a slope and a point. To find the slope we use the slope formula and substitute (x,y) points in it as shown below:

m=\frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1}=\frac{-9-0}{0--5}=\frac{-9}{0+5}=\frac{-9}{5}=\frac{-9}{5}

Now that we have the slope, plug in the slope and choose one point to plug into the point slope formula. Use the point-slope form to write the equation, then simplify and convert into the slope intercept form.

(y-0)=-9/5(x--5)

y=-9/5(x+5)

y=-9/5x-9

Now convert to standard form, Ax+By=C.

y=-9/5x-9

9/5x+y=-9

9x+5y=-45
