The factors which helped Constantinople and the Byzantine Empire to outlast the Roman Empire by nearly a thousand years were Constantinople's walls, which lasted nearly a thousand years and made the Empire's center of economy and culture extremely difficult to invade, the Justinian code (Law code that endured almost a thousand years), lack of money consuming measures like the bread and circuses, strategic location of Constantinople for the commerce and culture and the fall of the Roman Empire which led barbarian's attention elsewhere.
