Meiosis is a type of cell division, which leads to formation of four daughter cells from a single parent cell, having half of the number of chromosomes as present in parent cell.
Cells formed by meiosis are haploid cells as they contain half of the amount of genetic material as present in diploid parent cells.
Meiosis takes place in germ cells (gamete forming cells) and forms haploid male gametes (sperms) and female haploid gametes (ova) that combine together during fertilization to form diploid zygote.
