Other words that one could use for these roots are retention, detention, pretend, attentive, attend, entertain...All of these have added prefixes and/or suffixes that use the root word. Retention is to hold on to something over and over again. Teachers hope that students have a lot of knowledge retention over the summer. The boy hated detention because he felt as though he was being held down in handcuffs rather than enjoying the freedom of the warm Spring day.
