The main way in which the Virginia Declaration of Rights influenced the Declaration of Independence was that the former said it was the right (and duty) of the citizens to "overthrow" of dissolve corrupt and/or ineffective government.
One way is by having a list or bill of unalienable rights for the people governed. The federal government cannot take away those rights from the people; that puts a limit on the federal government's power. Having separation of powers also puts limits on the federal government's powers because the power is spread out and not concentrated in one part of the federal government.
