you can do that, but then you would have a run-on sentence. You could fix a run-on sentence with a comma and a fanboys. (Fanboys: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)
To take a stand can mean a lot of things, like supporting your ideas and beliefs. At times, people support and idea or belief to such an extent that they would die just to defend it.
