Read the passage from "Names/Nombres" by Julia Alvarez. “Say your name in Spanish, oh, please say it!” I had made mouths drop on

e day by rattling off my full name, which, according to Dominican custom, included my middle names, Mother’s and Father’s surnames for four generations back. “Julia Altagracia María Teresa Álvarez Tavares Perello Espaillat Julia Pérez Rochet González." I pronounced it slowly, a name as chaotic with sounds as a Middle Eastern bazaar or market day in a South American village. What is the most likely reason why Julia does not like to say her whole name? Her entire name is too difficult for her to pronounce. Her friends like to make fun of her Dominican name. It embarrasses her because it reflects her ethnicity. She does not like saying it, because it is too much trouble.

In at least two hundred words, explain how the musician from "Arrangement in Black and White" relates to the African
VashaNatasha [74]

Answer:

In "The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain," Hughes talks about the importance of identity and race in art. He argues that a true artist cannot be one in a way that is separate from his own identity. This is particularly true in the United States, where your racial background determines every aspect of who you are, what opportunities you have access to, and how people treat you.

This is illustrated in "Arrangement in Black and White." In this story, we see an African American artist who is admired by a white woman. The woman considers herself to be liberal and accepting of others. However, she is unable to look past her own racism and bias, despite her claim of being modern and understanding. This supports Hughes idea of the artist being unable to be an artist independently from his racial identity.

Select the correct text in the passage.
emmasim [6.3K]

The following lines show us that Haemon believes that the opinions of the Theban citizens should be heeded:

"The commons stand in terror of thy frown,

And dare not utter aught that might offend,

But I can overhear their muttered plaints,

Know how the people mourn this maiden doomed

For noblest deeds to die the worst of deaths."

The citizens, according to Haemon, are too scared of defying Creon; however, Haemon can hear their objections to his decision, and he knows that they are on Antigone's side. They believe she is dying unfairly, and he respects their opinion, which is why he brings it to his father.

Town of Sad

I'm walking the sidewalk,
in the middle of town.
My head is quite heavy,
it's pointing straight down.

I do not wish,
to look straight ahead.
My body and mind,
just feels beyond dead.

An intersection,
I finally reach,
Where I'm welcomed,
with a horrible screech.

Right or left,
I'm asked to choose.
But I continue along the sidewalk,
change I refuse.

My sidewalk is covered,
with sorrow an dirt.
I'm loyal to this street,
it's simply called hurt.

As I continue,
my pain sadly grows.
The shoes I'm wearing,
are called blue woes.

There seems like there's no end,
or slight hope in sight.
This lonely town,
forever has night.

It's just so difficult,
for me to leave.
As I raise my head,
I cannot believe.

A rusty sign,
with the name of the town.
It reads, "Sad",
and it's pointing straight down.
