In Chapter 18 of Nectar in a Sieve, Rukmani find out that Dr. Kenny has come back. She is excited to see him, and pays him a visit. Although it takes them a little while, the two eventually start talking like in the old times. Rukmani tells him her news, while he tells her his. He tells her that his wife has left him, and that his sons have forgotten him.

Gordimer avoids using the phrase "immediate actuality" in her writings. As Ettin notes, we never obtain a complete picture of the storyline and must instead orient ourselves by thinking about what hasn't been communicated. Gordimer illustrates the enormous attraction of this German, Jewish theorist by drawing on Adorno's views, further separating herself from the genre of black authors and redefining the goal of a political book.
