Islam gained momentum during the 10th century in West Africa with the start of the Almoravid dynasty movement on the Senegal River and as rulers and kings embraced Islam. Islam then spread slowly in much of the continent through trade and preaching. During this period these Muslims from North and West Africa came to be known by Europeans at large as Moors and were depicted by Europeans as black, swarthy or tawny in skin color.

According to Arab oral tradition, Islam first came to Africa with Muslim refugees fleeing persecution in the Arab peninsula. This was followed by a military invasion, some seven years after the death of the prophet Mohammed in 639, under the command of the Muslim Arab General, Amr ibn al-Asi.

lukranit [14]

Final warming during the Late Paleocene led to the warmest climate in the past 65 million years. This rapid warming about 55 million years ago was likely caused by the melting of methane hydrates.

Global temperatures have risen by 5-8°C. The onset of the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum is associated with volcanic activity and uplift associated with the North Atlantic magmatic region, causing extreme changes in the global carbon cycle and significant increases in temperature.

A period of severe global warming 55 million years ago was caused by not one but two injections of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The rate of increase suggests that ancient warming events could have important lessons for today's climate.
