Romanesque art developed durind the XI and XII centuries in Europe, especially in in France, Italy, Britain, and the German lands. During this period, the Church was a very powerful institution, this is why, the subject matter of Romanesque Art was religious and mainly scenes form the Bible were depicted. Besides, as most people could not read or write, the purpose of this art was also to teach people a lesson, a religious lesson.
