1. Why does Marie decide to cross the lake to get to the Bensons’? Do you think this is a good decision? Why or why not?

Answer:

1. Marie had to cross the lake to get help for Gramps.

This decision is not really a good idea as it is dangerous to walk on the frozen lake.

2. They showed their love for each other by taking care of one another and also by their common love for the legend which Marie used to comfort her Gramps.

Explanation:

The short story <em>There Were Giants</em> by Roland Smith tells the story of how Marie had to spend the winter with her grandfather. The story also reveals the relationship between the two when her grandfather had an accident and she had to decide on an impulse on how to get help despite the dangers of the area.

1. Marie had to cross the lake to get to the Bensons to use their telephone so that she can call for help for her grandfather who had passed out in the snow.

The decision to walk across the frozen lake may not be  a good idea as the lake is not fully solid and the ice may break anytime which is dangerous for her to walk on.

2. Marie and Gramps show their love for each other by taking care of one another despite the dangers. Their love for the legend of the finger, and how they know how to comfort one another shows they cared deeply for each other despite not really admitting to it.

I have a dream Which detail from the text best supports the answer to Part A?
GarryVolchara [31]

Answer:

"In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.”

Explanation:

This question is not full as it is missing the options and the answer to part A.

<u>Answer to the first part is:</u>

  • <u>"King believes that African Americans should not be denied their civil rights, and encourages others to be relentless in their non-violent fight for freedom."</u>

<u>The options to this question are as following: </u>

  1. “But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.”
  2. “In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.”
  3. “I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells.”
  4. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

<u>The detail that best supports the statement in the part A answer is </u>

  • <u>2. "In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.” </u>

<u>With this statement, King says they deserve the right place, civil rights, and equality, but that they should not take the violent measures or, as he called them, "wrongful deeds".</u>

<u>He wants to say that returning force with the force will not be good for the movement as it will only spread and continue the hate.</u>

He wants to fight for the civil rights of African-Americans peacefully, without spreading more blood and hate.

vlabodo [156]

Answer:

"Her situation demanded that she grow up before she should have."

Explanation:

In the given excerpt from "Pakistan's Malala" the author details how living in the Swat Valley under the rule of the Taliban greatly affected everyone especially Malala. And with the atmosphere, she also had to get accustomed to whatever is being brought up by the rulers.

The given excerpt reveals how she was made to grow up despite her young age. She wasn't a child with an <em>"idealist activist attitude"</em>, being merely a 10/11-year-old girl. But her love of books and studies were always there. The statement <em>"her situation demanded she grow up before she should have" </em>clearly reflects how she was affected by the Taliban's presence in her Swat Valley village.
