Martin Luther King Jr. was a nonviolent protest leader who became famous for his iconic speech "I Have a Dream." He was imprisoned nearly 30 times for civil disobedience. He also won the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 35.

Lots of random acts/laws were put into place to make things hard for southern blacks. For example, literacy tests and fees to be able to vote were instituted in some states as blatant ways to stop blacks from voting.
