Answer:

Hydroxide ion OH-

Explanation:

Bases are bitter in taste, slippery in touch and turns red litmus paper to blue. They contains hydroxide ion OH- and when they are dissolved in water, bases produces this ion. The production of hydroxide ion determines that a solution is basic in nature. When base is reacted with acid, in most of the case the resultant product is water as the H+ ion from acid combines to OH- ion of base to form H_{2}O.

H^{+}+OH^{-}⇒H_{2}O

Answer:

Bases are those substances that have hydroxyl ions present in it.

Explanation:

When these bases dissolve in water then they tend to separate from the base and yield hydroxide ions.

For instance, sodium hydroxide- There are certain bases that do not have hydroxide ion present in it but still acts as a base because they tend to remove hydrogen ions from the water molecule when dissolved in water.

For instance, Ammonia - it does not have hydroxide ion but still acts as a base.
