President Harry S. Truman wanted to avoid an all-out invasion of Japan in the Pacific, given that fighting was fierce on the European front against Germany. After hard decision-making and discussion with his board of advisors, he ultimately decided to drop the atomic bombs in retaliation of Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor.
