Martin Luther King Jr. was not only outspoken about civil right issues, but he was also interested in the Vietnam War and in the issue of poverty.

King was against the war. He spoke against the United States' actions, arguing that more money was spent in the war than in improving social conditions locally. He also stated that the United States had often been on the wrong side of revolution, like in the case of Latin America, and that they needed to side with the poor people of the Third World.

Poverty was another topic of interest to King, as can be seen due to his involvement in the Poor People's Campaign in 1968. This campaign wanted to address issues of economic injustice. He also wrote on the benefits of a guaranteed basic income.
