I would say NATO would qualify as not being used to increase political and economic co-operation in Europe at least not with the Soviet Union as it was used to combat the influence of the Soviet Union at least in Europe. Amongst the Western European countries it sought cooperation but not against the Soviet Union.

As the heavier tectonic plate, mostly the oceanic plate, is subducted, it enters the mantle and begins to melt. This makes magma that rises and erupts into a volcano in the overlying continental plate. This is how the Andes Mountains were formed.
