I think of the Royal Colony/ Trustee period when I think of the early United States. In the south, we treated slaves terribly. Generational trauma, African American disenfranchisement, and much more have been triggered by us. Free speech was already the first amendment right when the constitution was created<em>(same, I don't </em>
know if this idea is necessary, and it doesn't really fit into the rest of your paragraph.)
