The answer is A. The majority of the war had been fought on Southern soil until that point, so Lee tried to turn the tables and attack North instead of defending. Lee was hoping that a victory on Northern soil would show Northerner's how long and deadly the war would be, and they would pressure Lincoln to end the war.
