Conception occurs when the father's sperm cell enters the mother's egg following sexual intercourse. Once the sperm cell has fertilized the egg, the DNA from the two combine and it becomes a zygote. Cells within the zygote then begin to multiply within the mother, which will eventually lead to embryonic development and, after nine months for humans, birth.
