so now we have to find what X would be so we can do the second equation

So we know that the second equation must equal 6 because 9+6=15

So now we experiment with different numbers for X

if we did 2, the new equation would be 2x2+1 which is 5, too low

if we did 3, the new equation would be 2x3+1 which is 7, too high

So we need something in the middle

in the middle of 5 and 7 is 6 which is the number we need

so to get 6 we need something in between 2 and 3, which in 2.5
