Answer: Rutherford's experiment weakened the plum pudding model. Rutherford's model proposed the atom as planetary, the nucleus in the middle with the negative particles going around it. This model is far different from the plum pudding which proposed the atom to positively charged with the negative particles uniformly stuck in it.

Answer:

Thompson discovered the electron and also stated that these electron are not found with in the nucleus of an atom which is contrasting to his plum pudding theory

Explanation:

J. J. Thomson has used a cathode ray tube to conduct his experiment. He projected the cathode rays towards positively charged alpha particles at thin gold foil and found that all the cathode rays have easily passed through this foil carrying positive charge but when the same rays were projected to a negative metal plate , the cathode rays moved away from the metal plate. Through this observation, Thompson concluded that cathode rays are negatively charged and there is something negative with in a matter that he later termed as electron which are not confined with in the nucleus of atom but they revolve around the nucleus. However, in pudding model he said that atom is a positively charged pudding with electrons embedded in it.

Select the five major mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance. Check All That Apply
Rudik [331]

Answer:

All the given statements are correct except b.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) refers to the ability of a microorganism to grow in the presence of drug or a chemical that would normally limit its growth or kill it.

It makes it difficult for the existing drugs to eliminate the infection as they become less effective against the microbe.

There are five major mechanisms by which a microbe attains resistance against antimicrobial chemical or drug:

 1. Drug modification or inactivation: A microbial enzyme inactivates the antimicrobial agent. For example, few bacteria produce β-lactamases which provide multi-resistance against β-lactam antibiotics such as penicillin, cephalosporin etc.
 2. Alteration or modification of target site: An altered target site prevents the antimicrobial agent from binding to its target. For example, alteration of penicillin binding protein (PBP) in Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
 3. Alteration of metabolic pathway: The microbe uses an alternative pathway to circumvent the blocked pathway. For example, sulfonamides-resistant bacteria started using preformed folic acid in place of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA).
 4. Decreased drug accumulation: Microbial efflux pumps remove the antimicrobial agent (before it could do any damage) by pumping it out of the cell.
 5. Decrease in cell permeability: The permeability of the microbial envelope to the antimicrobial agent is decreased

Which of the following describes the lithosphere
Natalija [7]
Lithosphere includes all the Earth known to us: the mountains, the ground we walk on, etc. It's solid - else we would not be able to walk on it! the more inner layers of Earth are liquid, but lithosphere, the outermost layer is solid. The tectonic plates are not floating on the lithosphere - they form the lithosphere! So the correct answer is A - it is solid and composed of crust and upper mantle (outer later)

Each of pollan's chapters focuses on one particular plant and pollan suggests that each plant satisfies a specific human desire.
Debora [2.8K]

Each of pollan's chapters focuses on one particular plant and pollan suggests that each plant satisfies a specific human desire. The potato satisfies our desire for control – even more so now that we control its genes.

Though people might consider potatoes ordinary everyday fare, history demonstrates how crucial this vegetable is to humankind. Prior to the invention of the potato, conditions were challenging; many people, particularly in northern European nations, suffered from starvation and famine.

Malnutrition and starvation were eradicated in the countries that embraced the potato, and as a result, they grew stronger and more powerful. It is even conceivable that the potato spread resulted in a transfer of power from southern European nations to northern ones.
