Yes i find this statement made by Groucho Marx funny on its own. The writer created humor with the second sentence by making use of Dangling Modifier.

A modifier can be said to be dangling when the sentence is not clear about what actually is being modified. This line is attributed to Grouch Marx in the movie Animal Crackers where he played Captain Spaulding.

Dangling modifiers can be avoided in sentences when a writer breaks long sentences into many shorter sentences. This will make the meaning of the sentence clear. The image of an elephant in a pajamas is definitely a funny picture. hence the above statement is a good example of a dangling modifier.
